In a bid to encourage more inclusive marketing, Unilever-owned brand, @dove is offering to pay for their own models to appear in other brands advertisements.

Writing an open letter inviting other brands to use their beauty models from Project #ShowUs for free, at each international casting call, Dove’s models will carry a message: ‘if you choose me, and show me as I really am, Dove will cover the cost of my appearance fee’.

“For over 60 years, Dove has been taking action to represent real beauty – working to shatter stereotypes. We know from research that if women don’t feel represented, it can hold them back from reaching their full potential. By giving brands and companies the tools to show a more diverse representation of beauty, we are helping to change the way women are represented, which is proven to have a positive impact on how confident women feel in their appearance.” - Sophie van Ettinger, Global Dove Vice President at Unilever.

@beautybacked first launched last year to offer financial aid to individuals in the beauty sector who were unable to work due to lockdown restrictions put in place by the Government.

Today the initiative has relaunched after being awarded Trust status with the aim to support beauty professionals in their return to work after lockdown has ended.

Beauty Backed’s trustees include skincare expert @carolinehirons, Group Director for Caroline Hirons Limited, Alexandra Forbes, aesthetic therapist and owner of West Room Aesthetics @dija_ayodele, @babtac chief executive @lesleyiblair and MUA @lisapotterdixon, who have collectively released a statement:

“Over the last year, we have witnessed much of our industry struggle to stay open and viable. As a sector representing an 88% female workforce, with 82% of business owners as women, we need to stand together and make a change.

As trustees, we are truly passionate about the beauty industry and are delighted to be instrumental in taking Beauty Backed from a movement to a Trust. Our initial goal is to support as many beauty professionals as possible to get back to work.”

@unilever has announced it will eliminate the word ‘normal’ from all of its beauty and personal care brands’ packaging and advertising, as part of the launch of their new 'Positive Beauty' vision and strategy.

Positive Beauty, which sets out several progressive commitments and actions for their beauty and personal care brands, including @dove, @lifebuoy.uk, and @vaselineuk, will champion a new era of beauty which is equitable and inclusive, as well as sustainable for the planet. This comes as global research into people’s experiences of the beauty industry reveals that using ‘normal’ to describe hair or skin makes most people feel excluded.

A 10,000-person study, commissioned by Unilever, was conducted across nine countries and found that more than half of people (56%) think that the beauty and personal care industry can make people feel excluded.

Sunny Jain, President Beauty & Personal Care, said: “With one billion people using our beauty and personal care products every day, and even more seeing our advertising, our brands have the power to make a real difference to people’s lives. As part of this, we are committed to tackling harmful norms and stereotypes and shaping a broader, far more inclusive definition of beauty.”

Multi-award-winning journalist, social commentator, broadcaster, diversity advocate and Beauty Director, Anita Bhagwandas, has announced she will be releasing her debut non-fiction book entitled ‘UGLY’.

Smart, intersectional, and insightful, UGLY asks why our lives are shaped by such limited ideas about beauty, the damage they can do, and how to break free of them for a happier, more inclusive future. A melding of history, pop culture, psychology and memoir, the book will examine where our beauty standards come from and how they shape what we see when we look in the mirror.

“In a world of Instagram filters and fillers, we are all crying out for something to guide us through the very modern paradox of being told to love ourselves whilst also finding that perfect natural angle for a selfie. In UGLY, Anita unpicks the corrosive allure of the beauty myth, still all-too-prevalent over 20 years after we first noticed its dragging weight around our necks." - Susannah Otter, Editorial Director for @blinkpublishing

UGLY will be available in Spring 2022 in hardback, ebook and audio formats.
