Sarah Baker, Founder & CEO, Opalore
1.      Why is CEW membership important to you?
The opportunity to build relationships and be part of a network of professionals, industry veterans and fellow female entrepreneurs is invaluable to me as a brand founder. CEW also keeps me abreast of key trends, consumer insights and industry news; I recommend anyone who’s new to the industry to join and become part of this dynamic community.

2.      What do you enjoy most about working in the beauty Industry?
Without a doubt I would say the synergy of creativity and science. In my previous career, I was fortunate enough to work with some of the most iconic creative talents in the world and watched and listened as their ideas came to life; it was fascinating. I’ve also had a long-standing interest in science, of how it can be used for good to change people’s lives and improve health. I don’t know any other industry where the two come together so intrinsically. At Opalore, we combine these two fields with leading experts in biochemistry, genetics, epigenetics and stem cell research and validate our claims with comprehensive clinical trials.  It is a rewarding experience receiving the results and the best part for me is hearing the stories of how our products have helped people, knowing we have made a real difference to the health and appearance of their skin.

3.      What do you feel is the most important quality for someone to possess in order you have a successful career?
Entrepreneurship – possessing the right blend of ambition, bravery and passion for what you are doing, together with the ability to constantly think outside the box.
Â
4.      How important has mentorship been in your career journey?
Mentorship has always been of paramount importance to me, from my previous profession to launching my new brand. I discovered early in my career that you’re only as good as the people around you to learn from. The right mentor can help you find opportunities and provide essential guidance to steer you on the journey, accelerating growth faster.
Â
5.      What advice would you give to someone starting in the industry today?
Whatever path you choose within the industry, make sure you have a point of difference. Be detailed and thorough in what you do, and seek counsel from someone that’s experienced in their field. Above all, be passionate and stay focused on your goals.  Â
Â
6.      What are the values that you believe are important in developing a successful beauty business?
The values of Opalore are quality, integrity, innovation, and authority, which underpin every decision we make. They are the core principles I’ve always abided by throughout my career and are part of Opalore’s DNA.
Â
7.      What’s the most important piece of advice you have been given during your career?
Growth happens outside of our comfort zones. Always strive to challenge yourself to do and be better.

8.      How can we better support women in the workplace?
I like to place the emphasis on health and wellbeing by allowing a flexible work/life balance, not just for childcare but for time in further-education or other investments in their future. I believe this approach better empowers women to achieve their goals so that they can grow their careers and become leaders, closing the gender-gap at board-level in the process.
