Formula Botanica, the leading online teaching institution for organic formulation and indie beauty entrepreneurship, has just launched its first makeup course in what is a breakthrough move in natural cosmetic formulation. The short course covers the science of plant pigments and practical formulation skills in botanical colour cosmetics with a focus on lipstick formulation.
Formula Botanica invested in over two years’ research and development to perfect formulations using innovative plant pigments and devise the course material. Typically, natural colour cosmetics use mineral micas along with non-vegan colourants including the common animal-derived red pigment carmine. With this pioneering course, Formula Botanica has proved it is possible to formulate all-botanical colour makeup that performs like its mainstream counterparts.
The makeup course is a landmark also in terms of its delivery. Formula Botanica is offering it as a masterclass training within its members-only continuing professional development (CPD) site, The Lab at Formula Botanica.
Launched just under two years ago, The Lab at Formula Botanica runs monthly ‘Mini Labs’ or in-depth training modules on specialised topics covering advanced natural cosmetic formulation, innovative ingredients and beauty industry trends and business skills.
Commenting on this decision, Formula Botanica CEO, and CEW Digital Innovation Award recipient, Lorraine Dallmeier said: “We have been undertaking R&D on botanical makeup for years and decided that the best way to help our community crack the complexity of formulating organic makeup with plant pigments was to do it bit by bit. The Lab model is ideally suited to this approach”.
With a total of 24 Mini Labs available to its members, the CPD site has gone from strength to strength. The Lab is now a significant complementary arm of Formula Botanica’s core business delivering a portfolio of diploma and certificate courses in organic cosmetic formulation and beauty entrepreneurship.
With a finger on the pulse of innovation in the natural beauty sector, The Lab provides unique value to its community of natural cosmetic formulators through its combination of professional training, the latest cosmetic science research, ingredient libraries and live masterclasses with external industry experts. Originally conceived as CPD for the school’s own community, The Lab’s model proved such a success that Formula Botanica opened it to non-students last year.
The masterclass on plant pigments and lipstick formulation coincides with The Lab’s latest enrolment period, 9th – 15th March. Further dedicated Mini Labs in botanical makeup formulation are already in the pipeline with the next training scheduled to cover plant pigment blushers.
