Brand building company, ScienceMagic.Inc, proudly joins a growing group of companies and achieves B Corp certification. The B Corp community champions conscious business practices by prioritising purpose as well as profit. B Corp envision a global economy that uses business as a force for good.
David Pemsel, co-Founder and CEO of ScienceMagic.Inc (previously CEO of certified B Corp, The Guardian Media Group) said of the certification: “This certification is a valuable proof point which demonstrates who we are as a business and the journey of continued improvement that we are embarking on with the B Corp community”.
To certify as a B Corp, businesses are externally assessed and challenged to meet high standards across a range of criteria including: governance and transparency, working standards, community impact and environmental impact.
SMI builds, partners with and invests in the Brands and People of tomorrow using Science, Magic and Experience. A key part of the company’s ambition is to help brands work though their sustainability and purpose agenda, and provide strategic guidance on the steps to get there.
CEW Board Member Julietta Dexter, co-Founder and Chief Growth and Purpose Officer, said, “We are extremely proud to become a certified B Corporation. I have always believed that purpose has to be the foundation and back-bone of business success. No brand or individual will succeed in tomorrow’s world unless they can increasingly articulate their ‘reason for being’ well beyond financial success. We are very proud that team members at SMI have led and been successful in this B Corp process. Today is the first day of our B Corp journey of business improvement.”
Driving positive impact has been a critical part of the company’s growth and success, SMI’s long-standing Commitment is the foundational intent of the company’s culture since its first iteration in 1995. In 2020 SMI published a Pledge in support of Black Lives Matter, led by SMI’s Intersectionality Committee – a coming together of people in the company with lived minority experiences who are invested in helping to shape ScienceMagic.Inc’s approach to diversity and inclusion. Some immediate and long-term actions that form part of this commitment include a Pro Bono programme dedicating 650 hours per year to serve the wider community and a Volunteering programme giving every employee a maximum of five days a year to support causes of their choice. SMI’s commitment to improving diversity and inclusion will also continue to be a key focus for the business.
Chris Turner, Executive Director of B Lab UK, says “We are delighted to welcome ScienceMagic.Inc to the B Corp community. This is a movement of companies who are committed to changing how business operates, who believe business really can be a force for good. We know that ScienceMagic.Inc are going to be a fantastic addition to the community and will continue driving the conversation forward”.
For SMI, creating positive impact is a fundamental business priority with meaningful and progressive action shaped by employees through all levels and areas of the company
